History of Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari on December 24, 1892, before his trip to Chicago to take part in the 1893 'World Religious Conference'. He reportedly meditated on a rock for two days and was enlightened. He was one of the leading scholars of Ramakrishna, a 19th-century Indian architect, and thereafter played a prominent role in introducing the Indian philosophy of Yoga and Vedanta Indians to the West. In January 1962, marking the centenary of Swamiji's birthday, the 'Kanyakumari Committee' was set up by a group of people who aimed to establish a Swamiji rock monument and a bridge for people to visit the stone.

The 'Ramakrishna Mission' in Madras was also conceived by the memorial at the time. The idea, however, encountered some difficulties with local Catholic fishermen who showed no remorse and placed a large cross on the rock while Hindus, on the other hand, opposed such a movement of many Catholics. As matters deteriorated, the rock was identified as a restricted area and armed guards were hired to surround it. On January 17, 1963, with the approval of the government, a plaque was erected on the rock to indicate its association with Swami Vivekananda.

Establishment of 'Vivekananda Kendra'

On January 7, 1972, Ranade established a spiritual organization called 'Vivekananda Kendra' next to the memorial. The organization, based on the principles preached by Swami Vivekananda, has spread its wings to more than 18 states in India, including 600 branch centers and more than 200 dedicated full-time workers. The activities of this organization include conducting rural development activities, Yoga classes and seminars.
